ChetanKala ~ the conscious art, is a women led company based in Kolkata, India. It all started with keeping the interest of the process and the people involved at large before anything else. Ethics and sustainability are the heart of ChetanKala. This is how the company came into being. The foundation block was laid while working as an Associate Designer at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, where she was sensitised towards crafts and it's makers. She developed a passion for creating & discovering the beauty in carefully made unique pieces of art.
Interacting with artisans, learning about craft processes, participating in skill development workshops and understanding products in their original context, led her to create "ChetanKala" ~ the conscious art. This soul evoking journey helped her to inculcate and introduce livelihood means through design intervention. Transforming a community with raw / no craft skills into a skilled community by imparting knowledge via skill development programmes and training sessions.
She learned to crochet, a handicraft technique in order to connect and share her knowledge with the economically poor women, which initiated a soul evoking journey for her. Crochet is one of the most therapeutic and friendly art which helps bring and connect women together and help them generate a sustainable livelihood. Crochet is an art, an installation, a memory, a language, an embrace, an adventure.
Crochet is sustainable from the very beginning. You create something from nothing. As a result there is very little to zero waste. It can be passed between generations yet remaining fashionable. It is a technique that has popularity, has value, and significance for so many around the world. It's about understanding the magic of unwinding yarn balls to innovative creations.
Our mission is to infuse warmth, creativity, and individuality into the lives of our makers and customers. We are on a mission to help as many underprivileged women attain financial freedom through craft. With a commitment to quality and craftsmanship we aim to become a leader in the industry.
Chetan Kala's vision is to empower artisans, preserve handmade craftsmanship, inspire creativity, build a supportive community, spread joy, celebrate uniqueness, promote conscious consumption and make a positive difference in the world through ethical practices and the beauty of handmade artistry.
